Vienna speeds up buses and trams with stricter parking rules and smarter traffic lights
Vienna is taking steps to make buses and trams faster for passengers. The city plans to tackle illegal parking, improve traffic lights, and expand dedicated lanes. These changes aim to cut delays and speed up journeys across the network.
Currently, buses and trams face obstructions around four times a day due to improperly parked cars. To combat this, the city has raised fines for blocking public transport from €365 to €467. Authorities will also focus on clearing notorious parking hotspots that frequently disrupt services.
Over half of Vienna's tram routes already run on tracks separated from regular traffic. Now, the city will analyze every route to find further ways to reduce travel times. Where delays persist, targeted improvements will be introduced.
The city also plans to expand green-wave traffic light sequences, ensuring smoother journeys for buses and trams. Three-quarters of traffic lights already prioritize public transport, but additional priority systems will be added. These upgrades will build on existing measures to keep services moving efficiently.
The changes will help buses and trams avoid unnecessary stops and delays. With stricter penalties for illegal parking and smarter traffic management, passengers should see shorter travel times. The city expects these adjustments to make public transport more reliable in the coming years.
