Visa's Scam Disruption Team Cracks Down on $100M Social Media Fraud Scheme
Visa’s Scam Disruption (VSD) team has uncovered a sharp rise in fraudulent activity. In the second half of 2025 alone, the team identified 22% more scams than in the previous year. Their work plays a key role in building trust across the global payments network. The VSD team recently tracked a widespread 'survey scam' on social media. This scheme lured cardholders with promises of cheap products, then signed them up for hidden recurring payments. It generated around $100 million in fraudulent earnings, involving roughly 1,000 merchants across 21 European acquirers.
Using advanced analytics and intelligence, the team located and shut down the operation. Since its launch, the VSD team has stopped over $2.6 billion in fraud attempts worldwide. Since October 2025, an additional $1.6 billion in potential scams has been detected.
The team collaborates with banks, partners, and law enforcement to dismantle fraud networks. Their efforts help protect consumers and prevent financial losses across the payment ecosystem. The shutdown of the 'survey scam' ring has prevented further losses. The VSD team’s methods demonstrate how targeted action can disrupt global fraud. Their ongoing work continues to safeguard the payments system from evolving threats.
