Vladivostok’s Sports Harbor waterfront is undergoing a major reconstruction, but the work has caused severe traffic disruptions. Since early June, drivers near the Olympiets sports complex have faced gridlock, with lanes reduced to a single narrow passage in each direction. The project, led by contractor Conkrit Jungle Stroy, aims to transform the area with new amenities by mid-October. The reconstruction began in May, with plans to create a promenade, recreational zones, and an 'urban taiga' space. However, the work zone has expanded rapidly, now stretching from Building 4-B on Batareynaya Street to the Pyaty Ocean restaurant. Barriers have encroached onto the road, leaving just one lane open in each direction.
On Wednesday, June 4, traffic near Olympiets came to a complete standstill. An ambulance was forced onto the sidewalk, pushing motorists into oncoming traffic to avoid it. Parking has also become nearly impossible, with parents dropping off children and delivery trucks blocking the remaining lanes. Some drivers have tried detouring onto an unpaved road toward the TETs-1 power plant. But the route is narrow, uneven, and blocked in places, offering little relief. City officials have yet to announce when traffic restrictions will ease or parking return to normal.
The waterfront upgrade is set for completion by October 14, but until then, drivers and residents must navigate the ongoing disruptions. With no clear timeline for restored access, congestion and parking shortages are likely to persist in the coming months.
