City Tram Expansion: Is a Cost Increase of Millions of Euros Looming Here Too?

Volkmarode's rail expansion costs soar to €58 million amid delays

The cost of expanding the rail network in eastern Volkmarode has surged to around €58 million. This marks a €17 million increase from the original estimate for the tram line project. Initial plans for the Volkmarode expansion were already expensive. Now, the price tag has risen by tens of millions of euros, pushing the total to €58 million.

Meanwhile, the entirely new 3.5-kilometre tram line from Helmstedter Straße to Rautheim faces its own financial challenges. Its latest estimate stands at €52.4 million, higher than the Volkmarode project. The city administration has admitted that further cost increases for the Rautheim line cannot be ruled out.

The Green Party has voiced concerns about these potential rises. Construction on the new tram line remains unlikely to start soon, with its timing highly uncertain.

The tram extension and the planned 800-unit housing development in Rautheim-Möncheberg are still tied together. City council bodies will decide when construction can begin. A majority vote could redefine the start date for the Möncheberg housing project, leaving it in limbo for now. The housing project and tram extension are both on hold due to the delays. The city council will need to approve a new timeline before either can move forward. The financial and logistical hurdles remain unresolved.
