Weihenstephan Brewery Unveils Solar-Powered Charging Hub for Electric Trucks

Weihenstephan State Brewery has launched a new energy depot for electric trucks in Freising, Bavaria. The facility marks a significant step in the brewery’s push for sustainability. It combines solar power, battery storage, and fast-charging technology under one roof. The depot features two ceiling-mounted fast-charging stations, each delivering 150 kW of power. A modular battery storage system supports them, starting with 125 kW and 257 kWh capacity, with potential to expand to 375 kW and 771 kWh. The system is linked to the site’s existing 380 kWp solar array, enabling locally generated energy to power the chargers directly.

An AI-driven control system manages the flow of energy between the solar panels, battery storage, and charging points. This setup reduces reliance on the grid and cuts peak demand. Weihenstephan is among the first major German breweries to adopt such a battery-backed fast-charging hub for electric trucks.

The project aligns with the brewery’s broader strategy to lower operational emissions. By integrating e-mobility, renewable energy, and smart storage, the brewery aims to make its logistics more sustainable. Partners involved highlight the growing importance of such systems for cost efficiency and resilience against energy price fluctuations. The scalable design of the Freising depot allows for adaptation to other industrial and logistics sites. It supports the gradual electrification of commercial fleets. The brewery’s initiative demonstrates how combining technology and renewable resources can advance decarbonisation efforts.
