WhatsApp Web rolls out voice and video calls with end-to-end encryption

WhatsApp Web, now offering voice and video calls, starts with one-to-one conversations and will expand later. This feature provides a simple alternative to platforms like Zoom or Microsoft Teams.

Testing for WhatsApp Web calls began in early 2023. Meta initially limited access to beta testers in Europe and South America through the WhatsApp Beta program. By mid-2024, the feature reached a wider audience in stable versions.

All calls on WhatsApp Web use end-to-end encryption via the Signal protocol, ensuring conversations remain private and secure. Screen sharing is also available during video calls, allowing users to display documents or other content in real time.

Future updates will include group calls, call links, and scheduled calls. These additions will arrive after further testing and refinement.

The rollout positions WhatsApp Web as a straightforward option for personal and professional communication. Its encryption and screen-sharing tools aim to compete with established video-calling services. More features are planned as development continues.
