Wiesbaden braces for weeks of traffic chaos as major pipeline works begin

Major water pipeline works will soon start in Wiesbaden, causing traffic disruptions for weeks. Hessenwasser GmbH is renewing the mains, with construction set to begin on Tuesday, March 24. Drivers should expect delays as key routes face lane closures and diversions.

The project kicks off next week, running until April 16, 2026. Before the main works even begin, traffic changes will take effect at the Schiersteiner Straße intersection from Thursday, March 19.

During construction, only one lane per direction will stay open at the Schiersteiner Straße/Waldstraße junction. Two key movements will be blocked entirely: the exit from Waldstraße onto Schiersteiner Straße, and the entry/exit from Waldstraße toward Holzstraße (Dotzheim). Authorities warn of heavy congestion in the area. Residents are urged to use the second city ring road (2. Stadtring) as an alternative route. No details have been shared about the total length of the pipeline being replaced or similar projects in recent years.

The works will force drivers onto detours for the duration of the project. With lanes reduced and key turns closed, travel times through the area are likely to increase. The city has not announced further measures to ease the expected traffic build-up.
