Wolfenbüttel launches free bus rides for train passengers in 2026

Wolfenbüttel has joined the DB City-Ticket scheme, making local bus travel free for train passengers. The initiative launched on January 1, 2026, and aims to simplify onward journeys from the station. Deutsche Bahn fully funds the programme, so the city bears no extra cost.

The new system lets travellers arriving by train in Wolfenbüttel use all bus routes without buying a separate ticket. Lost fare revenue for local transport will be covered by DB Fernverkehr. This approach ensures no financial burden falls on the municipality.

The project was developed with VCD Wolfenbüttel and coordinated by the Verkehrsverbund Region Braunschweig (VRB). It follows a model already in place in around 130 German cities, including Braunschweig, Salzgitter, and Wolfsburg. By joining, Wolfenbüttel becomes the latest location to offer this convenience for rail passengers.

Deutsche Bahn designed the scheme to encourage smoother connections between trains and local buses. The move is part of a broader effort to make public transport more user-friendly across Germany.

The DB City-Ticket is now active in Wolfenbüttel, removing the need for extra tickets when switching from train to bus. The scheme operates without cost to the city, as Deutsche Bahn handles all funding. Passengers can expect easier travel when arriving in the area by rail.
