Wolfenbüttel: Local Utility Expands Renewable Energy Portfolio with Uniper Deal

Wolfenbüttel Utility Locks in Wind Power Deal for 100% Regional Energy Supply

Wolfenbüttel's municipal utility, Stadtwerke Wolfenbüttel, is pressing ahead with its goal of sourcing electricity entirely from Lower Saxony and the surrounding region. The company—based in the historic Lessingstadt—has now signed a power supply agreement with Uniper, the Düsseldorf-headquartered global energy firm, to procure electricity from onshore wind farms. According to a Uniper press release, the deal ensures that Stadtwerke will receive 100% of the output from a Lower Saxony wind park comprising six turbines.

The two companies had previously collaborated on gas supply, and this new agreement extends their partnership into the electricity sector. The wind park will play a fresh strategic role in Stadtwerke's portfolio, offering "economically attractive terms," as stated in Uniper's announcement.

Wind Farm to Cover 15% of Customer Demand

The new supply contract covers an annual delivery of approximately 9 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of wind power, meeting around 15% of Stadtwerke Wolfenbüttel's customer portfolio. Deliveries began earlier this year.

"As a municipal provider, sustainable energy supply is a cornerstone of our corporate strategy," said Vera Steiner, commercial managing director and spokesperson for Stadtwerke Wolfenbüttel GmbH, in the Uniper release. "This partnership reinforces our role as a reliable energy supplier by offering our customers CO₂-neutral electricity and further strengthening our commitment to sustainability."

The agreement takes the form of a pay-as-forecasted power purchase agreement (PPA), where billing is based on projected output. This model reduces risk and enhances planning security. Uniper notes that PPAs guarantee renewable energy supply, shield against price volatility, drive innovation, and significantly cut CO₂ emissions.

Powered by Lower Saxony

Stadtwerke Wolfenbüttel actively promotes its 100% regionally sourced electricity, all generated within Lower Saxony. The utility recently signed another deal with the planned Kissenbrück solar park, set to deliver roughly 17 million kilowatt-hours of solar power annually from 2027 onward.
