Woman loses £2,700 in Wells Fargo scam after fake fraud call

A Hockley woman has lost £2,700 after falling victim to a sophisticated scam targeting Wells Fargo customers. Ashlie Rinehart received a fake call from someone posing as the bank’s fraud team, leading to unauthorised transactions via Zelle. The incident highlights a growing issue, with some victims initially left without refunds despite reporting the fraud. The scam began when Rinehart took a call from someone pretending to be from Wells Fargo’s fraud department. Believing it was genuine, she followed instructions to enter numbers on her phone, unknowingly granting access to her account. Within minutes, two transactions totalling $3,300 were made through Zelle.

Wells Fargo rejected Rinehart’s claim for a refund three times, arguing that she had authorised the transfers herself. The bank’s policy states it will not compensate customers who follow scammers’ instructions to move money. However, in other cases, Wells Fargo has reversed its stance and returned funds to victims after further review. Zelle, the payment platform used in the scam, reports that fraud and scam rates remain very low—just 0.02% of all transactions. Eric Blankenbaker, a Zelle spokesperson, explained that many scams originate on social media or online platforms before shifting to private messages or calls. He warned that fraudsters often exploit trust by impersonating banks or other official bodies. After her experience, Rinehart now advises others to avoid answering calls claiming to be from their bank. Instead, she recommends visiting a branch in person to verify any suspicious activity.

Rinehart’s case shows how scammers manipulate trust to steal money, even when using secure payment systems. While Zelle’s fraud rates stay minimal, victims like her face challenges in recovering lost funds. Wells Fargo’s policies leave some customers without recourse, though exceptions have been made in certain cases.
