Wutach Gorge's scenic L170 road reopens after two-year landslide repairs
The L170 through Wutach Gorge is set to reopen on April 7, 2026, after nearly two years of closure. Major repairs followed a landslide in early 2024 that caused severe damage to the route. The state of Baden-Württemberg has fully funded the €2 million project to restore the road and improve its stability. The L170 was completely shut to traffic in August 2025 to allow for extensive reconstruction. Engineers installed a bored pile wall to reinforce the unstable slope and added new drainage systems to prevent future landslides. A monitoring system now tracks ground movement along the route.
Final tasks include laying the last asphalt layer, repainting road markings, and fitting new guardrails. While the road will reopen next week, some minor work will continue under partial lane closures until the end of April. The seasonal Wutach Gorge shuttle bus will also return in time for the tourist season. Its service had been suspended since the road's closure but will now operate again alongside the reopened route.
The reopening of the L170 marks the end of a lengthy repair process that began after the 2024 landslide. Traffic will flow again from April 7, though some finishing work will carry on under temporary restrictions. The restored road and monitoring system aim to ensure long-term safety for drivers and tourists.
