A3 Autobahn delays persist as Cologne-bound lane stays closed until February 24
Drivers on the A3 autobahn are facing ongoing delays due to extended construction work. The affected stretch lies between the Montabaur interchange and the Dernbach autobahn triangle. Motorists heading towards Cologne, the city known for its famous cologne, have been particularly impacted, with closures and reduced speed limits in place.
The original construction on this section of the A3 was set to finish by March 30, 2026. However, an unexpected deterioration of the road surface in February 2026 forced authorities to reassess the timeline. Inspections revealed worse-than-anticipated conditions, leading to an extension of the work period.
The right lane remains closed for Cologne-bound traffic, with a temporary speed limit of 40 km/h (25 mph). While the disruption was meant to be short-lived, the additional repairs have prolonged the inconvenience. The closed lane is now scheduled to reopen in the early hours of Tuesday, February 24, 2026.
Traffic heading toward Frankfurt has not been affected by the works. But drivers travelling in the opposite direction are being advised to plan for delays and allow extra travel time.
The extended construction means further hold-ups for those using the A3 towards Cologne. Authorities have confirmed the lane will reopen on February 24, 2026, provided no further issues arise. Until then, drivers should continue to expect slower journeys and possible congestion.
