A7 motorway shuts this weekend for urgent bridge replacement works
Closure of the A7 near Bad Brückenau for construction work - A7 motorway shuts this weekend for urgent bridge replacement works
A section of the A7 motorway in Lower Franconia will close this weekend for urgent bridge repairs. The shutdown begins on Saturday at 8:00 PM and lasts until noon on Sunday. Drivers will face a diversion near the Bavarian-Hessian border due to the works.
The closure affects the stretch between the Bad Brückenau/Volkers and Bad Brückenau/Wildflecken junctions, heading towards Würzburg. Around 42,000 vehicles use this part of the A7 daily. The issue centres on the Römershag viaduct, a 55-year-old structure suffering from severe structural defects and reduced load capacity.
Repairs alone are no longer enough, so a full replacement is underway. A new bridge has been under construction since 2022, with an estimated cost of €95 million. The viaduct's poor condition and inability to handle modern traffic demands have forced this decision. The A7, spanning 960 kilometres from northern Germany to the Alps, has faced years of construction. While other bridges along the route have seen isolated closures—such as one near Hamburg in 2024—this section in Franconia remains a persistent problem. A signed diversion (U54) will guide drivers around the works during the weekend shutdown.
The temporary closure aims to advance the replacement of the ageing Römershag viaduct. Once complete, the new bridge will improve safety and capacity on this busy motorway. Until then, drivers should expect delays and follow the marked diversion route.
