B244 reopens in June after €5.6M overhaul and new cycling paths
Major roadworks on the B244 between Wittingen and Zasenbeck are almost finished. The project included a full overhaul of the carriageway, new cycling paths, and bridge repairs. Officials have confirmed the route will reopen in early June after months of closures and construction. The €5.6 million scheme saw the B244’s road surface completely replaced in several sections, including the stretch through Suderwittingen. Workers also repaired bridges and upgraded auxiliary facilities along the route. To ensure safety, the road was closed in stages during the works.
New cycling paths were built or extended between Wittingen, Suderwittingen, Ohrdorf, and Zasenbeck. Michael Peuke, head of the Lower Saxony State Authority for Road Construction and Transport, highlighted that these additions significantly improve cycling infrastructure in the region. He added that the upgrades enhance both traffic safety and driving comfort for all road users. Andreas Ritter, mayor of Wittingen, thanked residents and drivers for their patience throughout the project. The newly refurbished sections and cycling paths are set to fully reopen in the first week of June, with all costs covered by federal funding.
The completed works bring smoother roads, safer cycling routes, and repaired bridges to the B244. The €5.6 million investment, funded entirely by the federal government, aims to benefit drivers, cyclists, and local communities. Officials have confirmed the route will be fully accessible again in early June.
