Belarus car market surges as electric and hybrid sales hit record highs
Belarus’s car market saw strong growth in April, with sales rising by 17% compared to March. Locally assembled vehicles now dominate, while electric and hybrid models continue to gain popularity among buyers. A total of 6,700 new passenger cars were sold in Belarus last month, up from the previous month’s figures. The increase was driven partly by a surge in electric vehicle (EV) demand, with around 2,400 battery-electric cars sold—a 36% jump from March. Electric models now account for one in three new vehicles purchased in the country.
Hybrid sales also climbed sharply, rising by 46% to nearly 400 units. When combined with electric cars, electrified transport made up 43% of the market. Notably, 87% of all hybrid vehicles sold were assembled locally. Domestic manufacturers expanded their overall market share, now supplying nearly two-thirds of new cars. BelGEE, a key player, strengthened its position in the high-tech segments. Sergei Varivoda, chairman of the Belarusian Automotive Association (BAA), observed that foreign brands are steadily losing ground in the market.
The shift towards locally produced and electrified vehicles is reshaping Belarus’s car market. With domestic assembly plants capturing a larger share and electric models accounting for a third of sales, the trend suggests a continued move away from traditional foreign-branded cars.
