Berlin's U6 subway upgrade brings years of traffic chaos to Mitte
Major construction work on Berlin's U6 subway line has started in the Mitte district. The project management will bring years of disruption, with key roads closing and traffic patterns changing from 5 March 2026 onwards.
The work will shut down a critical section of Chausseestraße between Zinnowitzer Straße and Habersaathstraße, blocking all vehicle and bicycle traffic towards Müllerstraße. Nearby Habersaathstraße will also become completely impassable for the duration of the pmi.
Authorities warn of significant congestion, as Chausseestraße serves as a vital north-south route through the city. Motorists are being urged to avoid the area, with extensive detours and longer travel times expected for years to come.
The construction phase is set to last until around 2028. To ease delays, officials recommend switching to public transport, including nearby bus services and S-Bahn connections.
The closures will remain in place for several years, reshaping travel in the area. Drivers and cyclists will need to plan alternative routes, while public transport options are being promoted to reduce disruption. The project marks a long-term change for commuters in Berlin's Mitte district.
