BMW recalls 87,000 vehicles in the U.S. over fire-risk starter defect
BMW North America is recalling nearly 90,000 vehicles over concerns about an engine starter that could overheat. The issue poses a potential fire risk, affecting six models from the 2019 to 2025 range. Owners will not face any costs for the necessary repairs.
The latest recall covers 87,394 vehicles in the U.S., including the 2020 340i, X6, 2020-2025 840i, 2020-2022 740Li, and 2019-2020 X7 and X5. Dealers will replace the faulty engine starter free of charge.
This announcement follows two earlier recalls for similar starter defects. In October, BMW pulled over 145,000 vehicles from U.S. roads. A month prior, another 200,000 cars were recalled for the same issue. Combined, these three actions now affect more than 341,000 vehicles.
No further details have been released about specific model variants or production years involved in the latest recall. The company has also not clarified how these vehicles differ from those recalled in September or October 2023.
BMW is addressing the starter defect by offering free replacements to all affected owners. The recall applies to a broad range of models, ensuring that potential fire risks are minimised. Owners of the listed vehicles are advised to contact their nearest dealer for repairs.
