Breakthrough Cryogenic Pump Could Revolutionize Liquid Hydrogen Transport
A new partnership aims to solve a long-standing problem in hydrogen transportation. ArianeGroup and Alfa Laval have joined forces to develop a specialised pump for liquid hydrogen tankers. Until now, no commercial solution existed for large-scale, long-distance transportation of this critical low-carbon fuel.
Before this collaboration, the industry lacked a scalable way to move liquid hydrogen efficiently. Existing technologies, such as cryogenic tanks from companies like Chart Industries or Linde, were limited to short distances or niche applications. Without standardised systems, long-haul maritime or road transportation remained impractical.
The new pump is designed to operate under extreme cryogenic conditions, where hydrogen must stay at temperatures below -253°C. Current methods, especially in road tankers, often rely on gravity or basic pressure systems, leading to inefficiencies and significant hydrogen losses. Warming during transit causes further waste, reducing the fuel's viability for heavy transportation.
ArianeGroup and Alfa Laval announced their deal in December 2024, targeting these exact challenges. Their solution focuses on minimising losses while ensuring safe and reliable transfers. The pump's ability to handle extreme conditions could make it the first commercially viable option for large-scale liquid hydrogen logistics.
The development of this cryogenic pump marks a step toward practical, long-distance hydrogen transportation. By reducing losses and improving efficiency, it could support the expansion of low-carbon mobility in heavy transportation sectors. The partnership's success may also encourage wider adoption of liquid hydrogen as a fuel alternative.
