Bremerhaven's Speckenbüttel Port Railway Station gets €56M high-tech overhaul for freight and military logistics

Groundbreaking Marks Start of Major Expansion at Speckenbüttel Port Railway Station

Last Friday saw the ceremonial first dig for the extensive expansion and modernization of Speckenbüttel Port Railway Station, with around €56 million earmarked for additional track capacity, state-of-the-art signaling and safety technology, and the digitalization of facilities.

Originally built between 1913 and 1916, the station underwent its last major upgrade from 1982 to 1985. Now, as part of the so-called "Group 20" project, a new marshalling yard is taking shape, featuring seven extra tracks—each roughly 740 meters long—designed to handle container, automotive, and military transports. These upgrades will enable far more efficient train assembly and temporary storage. The new tracks will be fully electrified and equipped with modern infrastructure, including brake testing systems, switch heaters, and contemporary lighting. At the same time, the existing infrastructure will be digitalized, integrating the signaling and safety systems into a digital control center.

High-Performance Corridor Between Bremen and Bremerhaven

The project is closely linked to Deutsche Bahn's plans to establish a high-performance rail corridor between Bremen and Bremerhaven. Robert Howe, CEO of Bremenports, emphasized: "Expanding our port railway station strengthens Bremerhaven's future—economically, logistically, and in meeting new security policy demands." Bremerhaven is already one of Europe's most significant rail freight hubs, with over 50% of container traffic handled by rail. In the roll-on/roll-off sector, rail accounts for more than 80% of hinterland transport—from cars and heavy agricultural machinery to military vehicles. The railway infrastructure will also play a pivotal role as Bremerhaven develops into a Deployment Hub for the transshipment of military goods and vehicles.
