California man arrested for forcing worker into cannabis farm slavery for two years

A man in Northern California has been arrested after allegedly forcing a worker to live and labour at a cannabis-growing site for two years. Jesse Upton now faces multiple charges, including human trafficking and illegal drug manufacturing. Authorities uncovered a large-scale operation with hundreds of plants and hazardous materials on the property. The investigation began after reports of exploitation at the site. The victim was allegedly kept in inhumane conditions, denied pay, proper food, and bathroom access. They were also deprived of basic living standards while working under Upton’s control.

On the property, officers discovered a butane honey oil lab containing over 240 gallons of butane. They also seized more than 300 cannabis plants and over 600 pounds of processed cannabis. Environmental damage was evident, with fuel, oil products, fertilisers, and chemical additives scattered across the land.

Upton was taken into custody on Monday. He is being investigated for human trafficking for forced labour, illegal cannabis cultivation, and manufacturing a controlled substance. Additional charges include possession of cannabis for sale and assault with a deadly weapon.

The victim has since been connected with support services through the Northern California Coalition to Safeguard Communities (NCCSC). Advocates are assisting them with recovery and resources. Upton remains in jail as the investigation continues. The case highlights the risks of illegal cannabis operations, including exploitation and environmental harm. Authorities are working to dismantle similar setups in the region.
