Chinese EVs Hit Roadblocks as US Dealers Like Lithia Reject Early Entry
Chinese electric vehicles (EVs) have made strong gains in Europe and Asia, but their entry into the US market remains uncertain. Lithia Motors, the country's largest car dealer, has ruled out stocking Chinese brands like BYD for now. The company cites major hurdles, including infrastructure gaps and regulatory barriers, that could delay any widespread US launch for years.
Lithia Motors currently operates 10 UK dealerships selling three Chinese car brands. However, the company has no plans to bring these vehicles to the US. CEO Bryan DeBoer stated that even if political tensions ease, Lithia will not be an early adopter of Chinese EVs. The firm's profits rely heavily on servicing and parts, which it claims are incompatible with Chinese models due to fundamental differences in operations.
The US government has maintained high tariffs on Chinese cars, giving domestic manufacturers more time to compete with their lower-priced rivals. Ford and Tesla have already announced plans for cheaper EVs, anticipating potential competition. Meanwhile, regulatory challenges—such as bans on Chinese software from 2027 and hardware from 2029—add further delays.
Building the necessary infrastructure for Chinese EVs in the US will take years. Factories, supplier networks, and service stations must be established before broad sales can begin. Geely, one of China's biggest automakers, has suggested a major US expansion could take 24 to 36 months from January 2026. Until then, dealers like Lithia see little reason to invest in Chinese brands.
For now, Chinese EVs face a long road before reaching US showrooms. Lithia Motors has made it clear that infrastructure and regulatory issues will keep them out of the market in the near term. Domestic automakers, meanwhile, are preparing for competition by rolling out more affordable electric models.
