Dubai targets traffic chaos on its busiest road with bold new plans
Dubai is stepping up efforts to tackle traffic congestion on one of its busiest routes. Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, a key corridor linking Dubai and Sharjah, currently handles around 1.2 million vehicles daily. With growing complaints about delays, authorities are now focusing on long-term solutions to ease pressure on the network. The road stands as the most critical entry point into Dubai, carrying 32% of all lanes for vehicles arriving from Sharjah. It features eight lanes within Dubai and remains one of the country’s most congested routes, especially during rush hours. Five major entry corridors, totalling 25 lanes, help manage the heavy daily flow of traffic.
To address the issue, Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) is examining ways to improve efficiency. Plans include expanding and upgrading alternative routes to spread traffic more evenly. The goal is to reduce reliance on a single corridor while boosting overall network resilience.
Beyond road upgrades, the RTA is also enhancing public transport options. New bus services and marine transport links between Dubai and Sharjah are being developed to offer commuters alternatives to private cars. These measures form part of a broader strategy to create a more sustainable transport system capable of handling future population and vehicle growth.
Transport infrastructure remains a top priority in Dubai’s long-term development plans. The focus extends beyond roads, with smart mobility solutions and stronger public transport services also under consideration. The initiatives aim to build a more efficient and sustainable transport network. By expanding road capacity and improving public transport, Dubai seeks to reduce congestion and support future growth. The changes will also provide commuters with faster, more reliable travel options between the two emirates.
