Dzerzhinsk faces water crisis after pipeline failure triggers explosion

A major water supply failure struck Dzerzhinsk in the Nizhny Novgorod Region on January 25, 2026. The incident disrupted cold water services and triggered an explosion in a residential area. Emergency teams are now working to restore normal operations across the city.

The trouble began when a 250 mm cold water pipeline near 18 Tsiolkovsky Prospect failed. This led to a shutdown of a larger water main, causing pressure drops in apartment blocks and heating stations. Around the same time, a separate explosion damaged several buildings, likely due to a hot water network rupture or sudden pressure surge.

Repair crews and specialised vehicles were quickly sent to the site. Authorities expect the cold water supply to be fully restored by 8:00 PM. Meanwhile, municipal workers from Gorod are treating streets with a sand-salt mix and clearing storm drains to prevent black ice from forming. The explosion and water pressure issues have left parts of the city without reliable heating and water. Emergency services remain on-site to manage repairs and ensure public safety.

The combined failures have disrupted essential services for residents in Dzerzhinsk. With repairs underway, officials aim to have water pressure and heating restored by evening. Street maintenance continues to reduce hazards caused by the incident.
