Estonian Railways upgrades 100 crossings for safety and accessibility in 2023
Estonian Railways is set to upgrade 100 railway crossings across the country in 2023. The project will cover key routes in western, eastern, and southern Estonia, improving safety and accessibility at each location. The company operates around 150 crossings in total. The selected 100 will receive new barriers, updated pipe fencing, and clearer signage. Each crossing will display its name, number, and a contact number for the dispatcher.
Work will also focus on better access for visually impaired travellers. Tactile paving stones and dotted tiles will be added to guide pedestrians safely. Despite the upgrades, train services will continue as normal, with no delays expected.
The cost of the project will be finalised during the procurement phase. Crossings were chosen based on train speed, frequency of use, and overall traffic volume. Information boards will be installed at every renovated site to provide additional guidance for users. The upgrades will enhance safety and navigation at 100 railway crossings nationwide. Visually impaired passengers will benefit from new tactile features, while all travellers will see improved signage and barriers. The work is scheduled to complete without disrupting train timetables.
