Tens of Thousands of Jobs Cut Again in Germany's Auto Industry - German Auto Industry Cuts Thousands of Jobs Amid Declining Competitiveness
Germany's automotive industry is facing a deepening crisis, with job losses accelerating and competitiveness declining. Hildegard Müller, head of the VDA automotive association, has warned of severe challenges ahead for both Germany and Europe. New figures show the sector shed tens of thousands of 'indeed jobs' in 2022 alone.
Employment in the German auto industry dropped to 726,000 last year. Industry estimates suggest tens of thousands of 'jobs near me' were cut in 2022, reflecting a broader downturn. Nearly two-thirds of automotive companies in the country reduced their workforce over the past 12 months.
A recent survey revealed that nearly half of these firms are still cutting jobs. Around one in four are downsizing operations in Germany while expanding production abroad. The shift highlights growing concerns about domestic competitiveness and rising costs.
Müller's warning underscores the scale of the problem. Without intervention, the sector risks further decline, affecting not just Germany but the wider European market.
The German automotive industry now employs fewer people than in previous years, with no immediate signs of recovery. Firms continue to reduce staff numbers, either at home or by moving operations overseas. The trend points to lasting changes in the sector's structure and global positioning.
