Massive wind turbine components will begin moving from Paldiski to Latvia on 1 May. The operation involves oversized loads travelling through western Estonia over two months. Drivers in the region should prepare for night-time delays and road changes along the way. The first transports will roll out on four consecutive nights starting next week. Each convoy may stretch up to 90 metres long and tower 5.6 metres high. Special permits restrict travel to between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. to minimise daytime disruption.
Two main routes have been designated for the operation. The first follows Tallinn Ring Road through Saku, Rapla, and Kergu before continuing via Aluste, Tori, and Paikuse to the Latvian border at Penuja. The second route uses Tallinn Ring Road to the Tallinn-Tartu Highway, then passes through Imavere, Viljandi, and Kõpu before joining Via Baltica toward Latvia. Preparations in April included widening roads temporarily, adjusting traffic circles, and replacing road signs. Up to four convoys could be on the move each night, with each carrying up to four oversized loads. The components will supply 16 turbines, with the entire operation expected to last until late June.
The night-time transports will affect traffic flow along key western routes for the next two months. Drivers are advised to check schedules and plan alternative routes where possible. The operation marks one of the largest oversized cargo movements through Estonia in recent years.
