Hamburg-Berlin rail line reopens after months of major upgrades
The rail line between Hamburg and Berlin has reopened after months of major upgrades. The first freight trains began operating on the refurbished route on Saturday evening, with passenger services now running as well. The route was closed for extensive renovation work that started in August 2025. The project faced delays, as the original completion date was set for the end of April.
Long-distance trains will run slightly slower in some sections for the first two weeks after reopening. Deutsche Bahn has warned of possible 'teething problems' due to the scale of the relaunch. Passengers are advised to check exact departure times before travelling today.
To mark the reopening, Deutsche Bahn has launched a family ticket for summer holiday travel. Priced at €99.99, it is valid for journeys between 26 June and 14 September and can be booked until 12 September. The first trains are now running between Hamburg and Berlin following the reopening. The family ticket offers a discounted option for summer travel on the upgraded line. Passengers should verify schedules to account for initial adjustments.
