Hamburg's rail chaos begins as key route shuts for summer upgrades
Hamburg’s rail network is facing major disruptions this summer as Deutsche Bahn closes a key route for essential upgrades. The Verbindungsbahn—linking the city’s main station with Altona—will shut down from July 14 to August 20. The work is part of a larger project to prepare for the new Altona Station, due to open by late 2029 about two kilometres north of its current site. The upcoming closure will halt all trains on the Verbindungsbahn, forcing changes to both local and long-distance services. Direct routes between Berlin and Hamburg will be diverted, cancelled, or rescheduled. This follows a similar shutdown in March 2023, when long-distance trains had to terminate early in Harburg or Pinneberg.
During the six-week closure, Deutsche Bahn will focus on renewing three rail bridges and completing vital groundwork for the future Altona Station. The new station, planned near the Diebsteich S-Bahn stop, marks a significant shift in Hamburg’s transport network.
Local S-Bahn services will also feel the impact. Lines S2, S5, and S7 will not run between Altona and Sternschanze from July 17 to August 13. Replacement buses will cover the affected section, ensuring passengers can still reach their destinations. The temporary closure aims to modernise Hamburg’s rail infrastructure and pave the way for the relocated Altona Station. Once complete, the upgrades will support smoother travel in the region. Until then, commuters and long-distance travellers should expect delays and alternative routes.
