Heartland Flyer's 90-Day Countdown: Can This Key Train Route Be Saved?

The Heartland Flyer, a passenger train linking Fort Worth and Oklahoma City, will stop running in 90 days. The service, used by 80,000 people each year, lost financial backing after lawmakers in both Texas and Oklahoma failed to allocate funds. Without new support, the route’s future now hangs in the balance. The current funding agreement for the Heartland Flyer expires on 31 August. Texas previously contributed $3.5 million to keep the service operational, but the state legislature did not renew this in its latest session. Oklahoma lawmakers also left the route unfunded in their budget.

The North Central Texas Council of Governments stepped in with emergency funds in 2024 and 2026. However, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) has since confirmed no new funding is expected. Officials added that no alternative financial source has been found to replace the lost support. Meanwhile, plans to extend the Heartland Flyer to Newton, Kansas, now face uncertainty. The Kansas Department of Transportation’s proposal relied on the existing route remaining operational. With its discontinuation looming, the expansion appears increasingly unlikely.

The Heartland Flyer will cease operations unless unexpected funding emerges within the next three months. The loss of the service removes a key transport link for thousands of annual passengers. Both Texas and Oklahoma have yet to propose a solution to keep the train running.
