Winter chaos in Hesse - ADAC offers tips for long traffic jams - Hesse's snowstorm triggers 84-kilometre traffic nightmare on A5 motorway
Heavy snowfall in Hesse has led to massive traffic jams, with delays stretching up to 84 kilometres on the A5 motorway. The region's steep gradients and high freight traffic worsen congestion during winter storms. Authorities are now urging drivers to prepare for unpredictable weather and potential standstills.
The latest snowfall caused gridlock on the A5 between Zeppelinheim and the Hattenbach interchange. Hesse's hilly terrain and busy routes like the A3, A5, and A7 make it especially vulnerable to winter traffic chaos. In 2021, extreme weather on the A7 in Lower Saxony created Germany's longest jam—over 120 kilometres—while other events, such as in 2023, saw delays of up to 60 kilometres.
The ADAC advises drivers to check forecasts before long trips, even though severe weather can be localised and hard to predict. Proper winter tyres with at least four millimetres of tread are essential for grip on icy roads. Clear visibility also depends on working windscreen wipers and enough antifreeze washer fluid.
To cope with long delays, motorists should pack warm clothing, blankets, snacks, and a thermos of tea. Keeping a fuel or battery reserve ensures vehicles can reach their destination once traffic clears. Carrying emergency medications is another key recommendation for those with health needs.
Winter weather in Hesse continues to disrupt travel, with steep roads and heavy lorries increasing the risk of jams. Drivers who prepare their vehicles and pack essential supplies can reduce the dangers of being stranded. The ADAC's guidelines aim to improve safety during unpredictable winter conditions.
