How Kolyma-Indigirka Shipping Navigated Soviet Administrative Shifts
The Kolyma-Indigirka River Shipping Company (KIRP) was founded on 10 May 1939. Initially under the control of Glavsevmorput At its creation, KIRP was assigned to Glavsevmorput, the Soviet organisation overseeing Arctic maritime routes. A.Ye. Lelikov took charge as its first director, guiding the company’s early operations.
In May 1941, jurisdiction shifted when KIRP was transferred to Dalstroy, the organisation managing labour camps and industrial projects in the Far East. This change marked a new phase in its administrative oversight. After Dalstroy was dissolved in 1958, KIRP came under the Ministry of River Fleet of the RSFSR. The transition reflected broader reorganisations within Soviet transport management at the time.
KIRP’s history spans multiple administrative changes, from Glavsevmorput to Dalstroy and finally the Ministry of River Fleet. Its fleet of 152 vessels, including 28 self-propelled ships, supported river transport in the remote Kolyma and Indigirka regions. The company’s operations remained tied to Zyryanka throughout these shifts.
