Protracted Approvals and the Decline of Combustion Engines

Legendary German Tuner AC Schnitzer Shuts Down After Decades of Innovation

AC Schnitzer is a globally renowned name in the tuning industry. The Aachen-based company cites unsustainable business conditions in Germany as the reason for ending its tuning operations. Soaring development and production costs for parts have created competitive disadvantages, but the decisive factor has been the excessively long approval process for components within the German regulatory system, which has increasingly left AC Schnitzer trailing behind foreign competitors.

"When we can only bring add-on parts to market eight or nine months after our rivals, that speaks for itself," explains Rainer Vogel, managing director of AC Schnitzer, outlining the challenges. On the demand side, shifting consumer behavior, deteriorating international market conditions, and the gradual phase-out of internal combustion engines have further exacerbated the situation.

Potential Brand Takeover

Yet the AC Schnitzer brand may still have a future. According to the Kohl Group, discussions are underway with interested parties regarding the acquisition of the AC Schnitzer name. Regardless of the outcome of these talks, however, existing inventory will be sold off by the end of the year. The tuner has also pledged to honor all guaranteed warranties and provide full after-sales support for AC Schnitzer parts beyond 2026.
