Lux Express battles freezing bus faults amid harsh winter conditions

Lux Express has faced a series of bus faults this winter as freezing temperatures cause problems on its long-distance routes. The company, which introduced nine new Neoplan Skyliner double-decker buses last year, has had to replace some with single-deckers due to cold-related issues. Despite the challenges, no departures have been cancelled so far.

The issues began when water in toilet flushing systems and coffee machines started freezing on several buses. Heaters installed in the tanks have failed to prevent the problem, leading to operational disruptions. As a result, Lux Express has temporarily swapped out some double-decker buses for single-deck alternatives.

The company spent €6 million on the new double-decker fleet in 2023. However, the current winter conditions—though not unusual for Estonia—have exposed vulnerabilities in the buses' systems. CEO Ingmar Roos confirmed that no trips have been missed, but some single-decker services have also been affected by the cold.

Lux Express has apologised to passengers for the inconvenience. The company is now working with the bus manufacturer to find a lasting solution.

While the freezing issues continue, Lux Express remains focused on maintaining its schedule. The problems highlight the impact of extreme cold on newer bus models, even in a country accustomed to harsh winters. A fix is still under development with the manufacturer's support.
