Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL) has raised the price of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) by Rs. 2 per kg in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. The increase brings the new rate to Rs. 86 per kg, marking the second hike this month. Piped natural gas (PNG) for household cooking has also gone up by 50 paise per unit. The latest price adjustment follows a similar CNG increase on May 14. MGL’s revised rates now apply across Mumbai, Thane, Navi Mumbai, and other areas within its distribution network. The move comes as global energy prices remain elevated, pushing up fuel costs in India.
Earlier this week, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas reported that state-run oil companies were absorbing daily losses of around Rs. 550 crore on petrol, diesel, and LPG sales. Despite this, the ministry confirmed that crude oil, petrol, and diesel supplies remain sufficient nationwide. In Mumbai, petrol currently costs Rs. 111.21 per litre, while diesel is priced at Rs. 97.83 per litre. The Centre has also instructed public sector fuel retailers to maintain stronger LPG inventories, ensuring at least 30 days of domestic demand coverage. The price hikes will impact both private vehicle owners and commercial transport operators, increasing their fuel expenses.
The latest CNG and PNG price increases add to the rising cost of fuel for consumers. With global energy markets still under pressure, further adjustments may follow. The government continues to monitor supply levels while state-run companies absorb significant losses on fuel sales.
