Maharashtra Approves ₹31,793 Crore Virar-Alibaug Transport Corridor to Boost MMR Connectivity
The Maharashtra government has given the green light to Phase 1 of the Virar-Alibaug Multi-Modal Transport Corridor. This ambitious Rs 31,793 crore project aims to transform connectivity across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). The first stretch will cover 96.41 km between Navghar in Vasai and Balavali in Pen, marking a major step in regional infrastructure development. The approved corridor will feature a 14-lane, access-controlled expressway designed to slash travel times between northern and southern MMR. It will also boost freight movement to and from Jawaharlal Nehru Port (JNPT). Once complete, the 126-km route will link key hubs like JNPT, Navi Mumbai International Airport, and the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link.
The project follows a Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) model, with land acquisition and detailed planning set to begin shortly. The corridor will pass through 104 villages across eight talukas in Palghar, Thane, and Raigad districts. Beyond the expressway, plans include integrating a metro rail component, further enhancing its role as a critical transport network. While the initial phase ends at Pen, future expansions could extend the corridor to nearly 128 km. Officials highlight its potential to ease congestion and improve logistics efficiency across the region.
With state approval secured, the project moves into its next phase of land acquisition and detailed planning. The corridor is expected to streamline travel and freight transport, directly benefiting both commuters and businesses. Construction timelines and further operational details will follow as the project progresses.
