Mainz braces for years of traffic chaos as major construction projects begin

Mainz has announced a series of major construction projects set to disrupt traffic and transport over the coming months. Mobility commissioner Janina Steinkrüger outlined plans affecting trams, roads, and utilities across the city, with some works lasting until 2029. One of the biggest changes will hit Hechtsheim, where the tram line will close for renovation during the summer holidays. The work will last until 2027, leaving residents dependent on replacement bus services.

Binger Straße, which has been under construction for nearly two years, will finally reopen to two-way traffic in late June. Tram services along the same route are also expected to resume in August.

In the Old Town, cable repairs will take place on Münsterstraße, Neue Universitätsstraße, and Kleine Langgasse. The latter will close for four weeks, causing local detours. Meanwhile, the district heating network will expand in Oberstadt, linking the Schneckenburger Areal and Universitätsmedizin to the grid. Nearby, Umbachstraße and Holzhofstraße will likely face one-way restrictions due to the same works.

Later in the year, demolition of the Hochbrücke bridge will begin, with full closures repeating until 2029. Bretzenheim’s Pariser Straße (B40) will also shut completely in autumn for bridge resurfacing near Haifa-Allee and Albert-Stohr-Straße. The projects will bring long-term improvements but cause short-term disruptions. Tram users, drivers, and pedestrians in affected areas should plan for delays and alternative routes. Detailed timelines and detour information will be released as each phase begins.
