Mainz's Gaustraße collapses after storm drain pipe failure
A section of Gaustraße in Mainz collapsed after a faulty pipe connection caused structural damage. The issue was traced to a storm drain, leading to urgent repair work. Traffic disruptions are expected until early April as crews restore the road and infrastructure.
The collapse occurred when a defective connection pipe linked to the storm drain gave way. A specialised vehicle from Wirtschaftsbetrieb Mainz later identified the exact source of the problem. Due to the complexity of the site, which includes tram tracks, repairs have required careful planning.
Repair teams are now replacing the damaged pipe and fitting a new drain. The work also involves restoring the subbase and resurfacing the affected stretch of road. Authorities have confirmed that Gaustraße will remain closed until the first week of April (calendar week 14).
The road will reopen once the pipe replacement, drainage installation, and surface repairs are complete. Tram services and traffic flow should return to normal shortly after the work finishes. No further incidents related to the collapse have been reported.
