Malaysia Speeds Ahead with EV Charger Rollout to Hit 2030 Targets
Malaysia is pushing ahead with its electric vehicle (EV) goals, rapidly expanding its charging network. By March, several states had already surpassed their annual targets for installing EV chargers. The country aims to have 20% of all vehicle sales as electric by 2030 while cutting transport emissions through better infrastructure. Kuala Lumpur and Penang led the way by exceeding 100% of their charger deployment goals as early as March. Selangor, with a target of 4,000 chargers, had reached 46% by the same time. Meanwhile, Johor, Pahang, and Sarawak each surpassed 50% of their respective targets.
The national plan includes adding 10,000 new charging stations before the end of the year. This expansion supports Malaysia’s broader commitment to electric mobility and reducing carbon emissions from transport. Globally, other nations are also advancing EV adoption. Ethiopia banned internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles entirely two years ago. Uganda, too, is electrifying its public transit sector to cut emissions and modernise transport systems.
Malaysia’s progress in charger deployment puts it on track to meet its 2030 EV sales target. With more stations being installed, drivers will have better access to charging across key regions. The push aligns with wider efforts to decarbonise transport and promote sustainable mobility.
