Massive sinkhole disrupts Chelyabinsk garage during metrotram construction

A sinkhole has appeared in Garage Cooperative No. 202 on Yelkin Street in Chelyabinsk. The damage is linked to ongoing metrotram construction The sinkhole emerged as workers excavated tunnels for the Chelyabinsk Metrotram line. By March 26, 2026, crews had completed 130 metres of tunnel from Ulitsa Ovchinnikova. Nearby, excavation pits at Kosareva station were nearly finished, with 93% of the foundation dug out along Prospekt Pobedy. Over half the rails for a bypass tram route at Ulitsa Kaslinskaya were also in place.

Local authorities confirmed the incident but stressed no injuries had occurred. The contracting company quickly began stabilising the ground by filling the void with sand and concrete. At the same time, builders introduced stricter geotechnical monitoring around the site to prevent further issues. The metrotram project itself remains underway, though no official timeline for completion has been released. Work continues on multiple fronts, including tunnel boring and station preparations.

The sinkhole has disrupted access for garage owners, but repairs are now in progress. With reinforced monitoring and ground stabilisation efforts, authorities aim to prevent similar incidents. Metrotram construction will carry on as planned, though the exact finish date remains unconfirmed.
