Mexico City's 'Grasshopper Route' debuts with electric trolleybuses and student-friendly perks
Mexico City has launched Line Zero, a new trolleybus route connecting Chapultepec CETRAM transit hub to Ciudad Universitaria. Dubbed the 'Grasshopper Route', it serves residents across five boroughs and was officially opened by Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum. The fleet consists of 60 fully electric, 12-metre-long trolleybuses featuring bright grasshopper-themed designs. Each vehicle is fitted with USB and USB-C charging ports, which one student, Claudia, found particularly useful during her commute.
On its first day, the journey took around two hours due to heavy traffic along Avenida Revolución. The trolleybuses ran without overhead wires, as the catenary system is not yet operational. The route begins at Avenida Chapultepec and ends outside Estadio Olímpico Universitario.
The project required an investment of 1.2 billion pesos. Mayor Sheinbaum introduced the service as part of the city’s efforts to improve public transport. Claudia, a regular commuter, suggested reducing travel times to make the route more efficient. Line Zero is now in service, linking key areas of the city with modern, eco-friendly vehicles. The new trolleybuses aim to provide a reliable and convenient travel option for students and residents. Further adjustments may follow to address initial delays.
