Mittelrheinbahn unveils fully modernized fleet with upgraded passenger comfort
The Mittelrheinbahn fleet has completed a full modernisation programme. Seventeen vehicles underwent upgrades, with the final one unveiled in early May. The project introduced new features while keeping services running as usual. The refurbishment cost around 10 million euros. Transport authorities contributed 3 million, while Alpha Trains provided a seven-figure investment. Work took place at Siemens Mobility’s workshop in Wegberg-Wildenrath, ensuring no service interruptions.
The upgraded trains now offer redesigned seating, LED lighting, and extra power outlets. Passengers also benefit from free Wi-Fi and TFT displays showing real-time travel updates. The exterior received a partial repaint, giving the fleet a refreshed look. Trans Regio, an EVN subsidiary, remains the operator for the Mittelrheinbahn. Maintenance for all vehicles will stay based in Koblenz-Moselweiß. The fleet had already expanded in late 2020 with six new Siemens Mireo trains.
The modernisation brings improved comfort, connectivity, and passenger information. With all 17 vehicles now upgraded, the Mittelrheinbahn continues operations under Trans Regio. The project marks a significant investment in regional rail services.
