Mumbai Road Safety Alert: High-Speed E-Two-Wheelers Allegedly Running Without Registration; Experts Seek Crackdown

Mumbai cracks down on unregistered high-speed e-bikes sold illegally

A Worli showroom is under scrutiny for allegedly selling high-speed e-bikes without informing buyers about mandatory registration. Thousands of unregistered electric two-wheelers, capable of speeds above 25 kmph, are now operating on Mumbai’s roads. Authorities have promised to investigate the issue after public complaints. Under current rules, electric two-wheelers exceeding 25 kmph or with an output above 0.25 kW must be registered. Many high-speed e-bikes, however, remain unregistered and lack number plates or registration certificates. Some are even being used to carry heavy loads, raising safety concerns.

Rickshaw Men's Union General Secretary Thampi Kurian has called for a special enforcement drive against these unregistered vehicles. He warned that without proper checks, such bikes may operate without insurance or safety certification. The Motor Vehicles Act, under Sections 182A and 183, allows authorities to penalise unauthorised modifications and speed violations.

State Transport Commissioner Rajesh Narvekar confirmed that the matter would be reviewed. He assured that appropriate action would be taken once the investigation is complete. The crackdown aims to ensure all high-speed e-bikes comply with registration laws. Unregistered vehicles currently make enforcement difficult, as they often lack proper documentation. Authorities will now focus on identifying and penalising violations under existing traffic regulations.
