Munich's Westkreuz station gets €110M upgrade to cut train delays by 2027

Deutsche Bahn Begins Construction at Westkreuz to Expand Munich's S-Bahn Network

With the start of construction at Westkreuz station, Deutsche Bahn is pushing ahead with the expansion of Munich's S-Bahn system. This key infrastructure project aims to eliminate bottlenecks, stabilize operations, and significantly increase network capacity.

Deutsche Bahn has begun work on the so-called Network Supplement Measure 13 at Munich Westkreuz. The project is part of the city's second S-Bahn trunk line and will include a grade-separated junction to allow conflict-free S-Bahn operations in the future.

Currently, multiple S-Bahn lines intersect at Westkreuz, often causing operational delays. The new infrastructure will enable independent routing for each line, leading to more stable service, higher frequencies—including a 15-minute interval—and additional express connections.

Beyond rail upgrades, the project also involves adjustments to the surrounding road network. Starting in 2027, the city of Munich plans to expand Bodenseestraße to improve traffic safety for cars, cyclists, and pedestrians.

Construction will largely take place while services continue to run, though temporary closures and replacement transport will be necessary at times. The project is scheduled for completion by the end of 2027. The federal government, the Free State of Bavaria, the city of Munich, and Deutsche Bahn are jointly investing around €110 million in the initiative. The second S-Bahn trunk line is expected to enter service between 2035 and 2037.
