Nissan NZ drops SUVs, delays EVs, and eyes a new plug-in hybrid ute
Nissan New Zealand is reshaping its vehicle lineup with a stronger focus on electrified models. The company has announced the discontinuation of two popular SUVs while delaying the launch of a key electric car. At the same time, a new plug-in hybrid ute is being considered for the local market.
The Pathfinder large SUV and the Juke compact crossover will no longer be imported into New Zealand. Nissan cited the lack of future hybrid or fully electric versions as the reason for dropping the Pathfinder. Meanwhile, the Juke's removal aligns with the brand's shift toward electrification.
The all-electric Leaf has also been put on indefinite hold. This decision follows increased competition in the EV market and feedback from dealers. Additionally, the Ariya EV has been shelved after the government scrapped the Clean Car Discount scheme.
On the horizon, the Frontier Pro PHEV could arrive as a new hybrid option. Developed with Dongfeng, this plug-in hybrid ute offers an electric-only range of up to 135km and vehicle-to-load capability. Production began in China in late 2025, with plans for a global rollout. Nissan has hinted at a significant announcement for the ute market soon, though no specific details have been confirmed.
Nissan's changes reflect a broader push toward electrified vehicles in New Zealand. The discontinuation of older models and the potential introduction of the Frontier Pro PHEV signal a shift in strategy. Dealers and customers will now await further updates on the brand's future offerings.
