Nizhny Novgorod Oblast spends $8M on life-saving road upgrades in 2025

Nizhny Novgorod Oblast has invested heavily in road safety upgrades. In 2025, over 740 million rubles (around $8 million) were allocated to modernise infrastructure. The project included new crash barriers, improved pedestrian crossings, and upgraded bus stops.

The upgrades covered a wide range of safety measures. A total of 30.5 kilometres of metal guardrails were installed along key routes, such as the access road to Ideal, the Ardatov–Turkushi route, and the Nizhny Novgorod–Saratov–Vad–Morozovka road. These barriers aim to reduce the risk of serious accidents.

Pedestrian safety also received significant attention. Sixty-eight crossings now feature projected zebra markings, making them more visible in darkness and bad weather. Additionally, 100 bus stops were modernised with reinforced concrete pavilions and newly built sidewalks.

The project didn't stop there. Over 7,960 kilometres of road markings were refreshed, and 4,237 traffic signs were either replaced or installed. Leonid Samukhin, director of the Nizhny Novgorod Oblast State Road Agency, stressed the importance of a structured approach to these improvements.

The upgrades represent a major push to enhance road safety across the region. With new barriers, clearer markings, and better pedestrian facilities, authorities aim to create safer travel conditions. The long-term impact of these changes will depend on ongoing maintenance and monitoring.
