Northern Railway launches safety blitz to curb level crossing accidents

Northern Railway is marking International Level Crossing Awareness Day with safety campaigns and inspections. The initiative involves rail workers, traffic police, public groups, and journalists. Their goal is to reduce accidents at crossings through education and stricter enforcement. Since January 2026, six accidents have been recorded at Northern Railway crossings, including one injury. A recent incident occurred on January 10 in the Republic of Komi, where a collision took place at the 57 km crossing between Yazel and the 47 km siding on the Mikun–Syktyvkar line.

Motorists are receiving reminders about traffic rules, safety talks, and informational leaflets on crossing procedures. To deter violations, 17 crossings at regional road intersections will also be fitted with 'stinger' beams. The railway is upgrading infrastructure through major repairs and new technology. This year, 12 crossings will undergo full overhauls, while 39 sites will get new rubber-cord surfacing and 135 will be repaved. Advanced warning systems, improved barriers, and photo-video enforcement cameras are also being installed. Rashid Saybatlov, head of the Northern Railway, has stressed that preventing crossing accidents remains a key priority for the network.

The combined efforts aim to enhance safety through education, stricter enforcement, and infrastructure upgrades. By the end of 2026, the railway expects fewer violations and improved conditions at level crossings across its regions.
