Russia's New High-Speed River Fleet Revives Forgotten Waterways
A new centre for high-speed shipping has opened in Nizhny Novgorod Region. Called the Innovative High-Speed Fleet Centre, it aims to revive and expand fast river transport across the area. The project will bring together shipbuilders, government bodies, and commercial firms to develop modern vessels for smaller waterways. The centre will focus on producing high-speed boats capable of navigating shallow rivers like the Piana and Sura. Each vessel, costing at least 35 million rubles, can carry between 32 and 45 passengers. Their design includes lifting foils, allowing them to travel in low waters and dock directly on riverbanks.
The Volga State Academy of Water Transport will serve as the centre’s academic and operational base. Alongside shipbuilding companies, financial institutions, leasing firms, and insurers will also participate in the project. Officials hope the new fleet will attract tourists to lesser-known rivers, offering an alternative to traditional Volga cruises. The vessels could also support major events, including the Universiade in Kazan. Their speed and shallow-water capabilities make them suitable for both passenger transport and specialised services.
The centre’s launch marks a push to modernise river transport in the region. With a focus on high-speed, shallow-draft vessels, it targets both tourism and logistical needs. The first boats are expected to enter service in the coming years, serving smaller rivers and connecting remote areas.
