Salzgitter plans new traffic cameras to curb red-light violations at dangerous intersection
Salzgitter's city administration has proposed installing two new traffic enforcement cameras at a high-risk intersection. The systems will monitor red-light violations and speed at Ludwig-Erhard-Straße and Peiner Straße. Officials expect the move to improve safety and generate extra revenue from fines.
The intersection in Engelnstedt has seen seven accidents caused by red-light violations between 2022 and 2024. This record makes it one of the most dangerous spots in the area. The city's decision follows a broader rise in red-light offences across Salzgitter.
The planned cameras will be fixed units with both red-light and speed detection. They will track vehicles leaving the city as well as those heading toward Lengede on Peiner Straße. The total cost for installation is estimated at €220,000, funded initially by the 'Safe & Clean 2.0' campaign budget.
Before the project moves forward, the proposal must pass through committee reviews. The city council will then make a final decision. If approved, the cameras are expected to bring in around €50,000 each year from fines.
The new enforcement systems aim to reduce accidents at a problematic junction. Funding will come from existing city resources, with no additional tax burden. The final decision rests with the city council after committee assessments.
