Multiple Major Construction Sites on Highways This Year - Saxony-Anhalt's massive roadworks promise relief but bring delays in 2024
Major roadworks will disrupt traffic across Saxony-Anhalt this year, with several highways facing delays. The projects aim to ease congestion and improve infrastructure, including key routes like the A2, A14, and A38. Truck traffic, which makes up a third of vehicles on these roads, remains a persistent challenge for planners.
One of the biggest issues on the A2 involves long queues of lorries blocking the right lane while the left lane stays empty. To address this, authorities will allow trucks to use the left lane for overtaking in construction zones starting in 2026.
The A14 expansion remains a top priority, with the Magdeburg-Schönebeck section set for completion by 2025. The Wittenberg stretch should follow in 2026, and the entire route from Magdeburg to Schwerin is expected to open by 2028. Construction tenders for the remaining sections will be awarded between 2024 and 2025. Before the summer holidays, another segment—linking Lüderitz to the B188 near Stendal—will also become operational.
Other key projects include upgrades on the A2 near Alleringersleben, the A36 close to Wernigerode, and the A38 around Leuna. The state has allocated €213 million for highway maintenance and construction in 2026 alone.
The roadworks will bring long-term improvements but are likely to cause short-term delays. Truck drivers will gain more flexibility in construction zones, while the A14 expansion moves closer to completion. The funding and planned upgrades aim to reduce congestion and support the region's heavy freight traffic.
