Smart Labels Could Revolutionize Airline Food Safety and Cut Waste
A new temperature-sensitive label aims to improve food safety for airline catering. The Freshtag Flight Label, developed by Vitsab International, changes colour to show whether perishable items remain safe to serve. Airlines hope the innovation will cut waste, save costs, and reassure passengers about meal quality. The label works using a simple stoplight system. Green indicates safe storage conditions, yellow signals moderate exposure, and red warns of unsuitable temperatures. This visual cue allows staff to check food safety instantly, no matter their language or location.
Designed for frozen, refrigerated, or passive galley storage, the label helps streamline transport, storage, and onboard service. It also meets strict food safety rules, including World Food Safety Guidelines for Airline Catering, FDA standards, and EU regulation 852/2004. Beyond safety, the label aims to reduce costs. Airlines expect to save fuel by cutting onboard weight and lower expenses by minimising packaging and ingredient waste. Unused but still-safe perishables can even be transferred to later flights or donated to charity. The Freshtag Flight Label is built to fit easily into existing airline Food Safety Management Systems (FSMS) and Quality Management Systems (QMS). Its low cost and simplicity make it a practical addition for carriers looking to improve efficiency. This isn’t the first time temperature-sensitive tech has been used in food packaging. Cadbury once released a cold-activated wrapper for its Dairy Milk Summer Edition, revealing summer-themed designs when chilled. Similarly, Hellmann’s and Ogilvy created a mayonnaise jar with thermochromic ink to alert consumers if the product was stored at unsafe temperatures.
The Freshtag Flight Label could transform how airlines handle perishable food. By reducing spoilage, cutting costs, and ensuring compliance with safety standards, it offers a straightforward solution for catering operations. Passengers may also benefit from greater confidence in the meals they receive on board.
